How To Become a Video Editor in India 2024

Gone are those days when people thought a 9 to 5 Job was the best option. Nowadays, there are plenty of things that anyone can start from home and make a lot of money. In today’s world, Video Editing is one of them. I will try to share my thoughts and learnings as a Freelance Video Editor with all of you so that you know how to become a video editor in India 2024.

I started my career in Digital Marketing as a Blogger. It helped me a lot to change our financial background. But now I am focusing a lot more on shifting my career options. There are two reasons behind it. Number one, AI has come and it’s become a nightmare for content writers or bloggers like us. And number two, I believe AI can do basic video editing but it can’t replace professional and industry-level video editors. There are plenty of things that you can learn and master any one of them to get a high-paying job in India as a video editor. Just be consistent and focus on upgrading your skills every day.

In 2016-2017, it was possible to edit videos on Mobile but not that professional level. Now you can do this at quite a good level but when it comes to making money through those skills, you need to learn professional software. Mobile apps like CapCut, Inshot or VN can edit great videos but you can’t get a job with this. You have to learn Davinchi Resolve, Apple Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects software.

How To Become a Video Editor in India 2024

If you have some money in your pocket or if you can borrow money from your parents then becoming a video editor will be a little bit better for you. Because you can take some professional creators courses and you can learn everything chapterwise in a very short period. Professional editors are selling their courses and sharing everything they know. It will hardly cost you a max of ₹10,000 for a lifetime period. I strongly suggest you buy a good creator course if you can. Because it will be a game changer and time saver for you. Trust me, if Video editing is your passion then you won’t regret it.

But what about those people who don’t have money? Don’t worry friends. I was also in the same position when I started learning Blogging. Everything is available on YouTube and Google. The professionals who are selling their courses are also learn everything online by watching free videos. It’s just that it will take a long time to learn everything, you have to practice, face problems and then find each problem’s solution online to tackle it.

Where To Learn Video Editing

The word “video” tells you everything about it. You can’t learn video editing by reading articles. But yes, you can learn video editing and start your agency within a few months by watching and practising YouTube videos. The process won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. Trust me.

When I started video editing for the first time, it was through a Mobile App called KineMaster. The purpose of it was to edit my YouTube Videos. After that, I became interested in video editing and started learning and practising it on my Macbook. I use Final Cut Pro X to edit my videos, Adobe Premiere Pro, and sometimes Adobe After Effects for client projects.

These days, many creators are making and selling courses to teach video editing. You can buy them if you want, but I don’t think taking a course to learn video editing is necessary. About 90% of the people selling these courses also learned everything online, through YouTube and Google. You can do the same. If we could become video editors just by watching a few tutorials, then why can’t you do it too, with so many video editing tutorials available on various channels today? You just need to identify your problems and find solutions for them. Some good channels where you can learn video editing are GFX Mentor, DopeMotion etc.

Can We Do Professional Video Editing On Mobile?

Nowadays, mobile devices can handle high-quality video editing quite well. However, it wasn’t always like this. Back in the early days, around 2018-2019, when I was just starting to dabble in video editing, I primarily used the Kinemaster app for editing videos. There were also other apps at the time, such as PowerDirector and Filmora. But professional-grade video editing wasn’t something I could do well back then, and mobile devices weren’t capable enough either.

Gradually, as I decided to focus more on YouTube, a few more years had passed, and by then, several new apps had entered the market, like VN, Alight Motion, InShot, CapCut, etc. Nowadays, these apps can deliver computer-level editing capabilities. Many people earn money by editing videos on mobile devices. However, there’s a catch: even though you can apply numerous effects with a single click on a mobile app, editing a lengthy video takes a lot of time. The reasons include the smaller screen, limited processing capacity of mobiles, and restricted storage space. Unlike computers, mobiles don’t allow you to add additional storage or manage multiple client projects simultaneously.

There’s also another important aspect. A client hiring you for video editing will always expect high-quality results. When you submit a project to the client, they may inquire about the software you used for editing before compensating you. If they find out that you edited the video on a mobile device, they might undervalue your work and offer less payment. This is one of the primary reasons why many people who start editing videos on mobile eventually transition to computer-based editing.

Best Video Editing Software in India 2024

When it comes to video editing, there are numerous software options available in the market today. However, if someone wants to create high-quality edits for their YouTube channel or social media, learning professional video editing software becomes essential. Mastering these tools can indeed be expensive, but nowadays, you can also learn video editing by watching YouTube tutorials.

I learned everything I know about editing from YouTube. Taking a course is beneficial as it allows you to learn everything in a much shorter time. However, it’s completely wrong to think that you cannot learn editing without enrolling in a course.

These are the best video editing software in India that I use most of the time.

1. Adobe Premiere Pro

Those who earn money through video editing mostly use Premiere Pro. There are several reasons for this, with the primary one being that it is widely used and offers a variety of effects that can be applied. Additionally, Premiere Pro allows for collaborative editing, making it easier for multiple people to work on the same project simultaneously. The software receives regular updates, and its user-friendly interface simplifies many tasks.

However, Premiere Pro also has its downsides. One major issue is that the software tends to lag frequently. It often freezes, causes rendering problems, and sometimes forces users to redo a significant portion of their work while managing projects. Because of these issues, many people are gradually turning away from this software.

2. Adobe After Effects

The second software is Adobe After Effects. This software is primarily used for compositing, adding VFX, and performing specialized tasks in videos. By dynamically linking After Effects with Premiere Pro or other Adobe software, videos can be made even more engaging. This dynamic link feature allows seamless integration, and After Effects is particularly useful for adding 3D elements or VFX to enhance video quality.

I bought a computer solely to learn video editing properly. My main goal is to master After Effects so that I can apply VFX to both my own YouTube videos and client projects. None of Adobe’s software is free; we need to pay a subscription fee every month to use them. Additionally, without a high-performance computer or laptop, working with these tools can be quite challenging.

3. Davinchi Resolve

Apart from Premiere Pro, another software that has become quite popular nowadays is DaVinci Resolve. One of the main reasons for its popularity is that it doesn’t require a monthly subscription fee. It also has a free version that can handle most editing tasks. If someone wants the full version, they can purchase it for a one-time payment of around $300, which grants lifetime access without any additional costs.

What’s fascinating about this software is that it allows not only video editing, audio editing, and VFX but also offers the best-in-class colour grading. Developed by Blackmagic Studio, this software might even come free with some of their other products, making it an even more attractive option for professionals.

4. Final Cut Pro

Personally, my favourite video editing software is Final Cut Pro. There are many reasons for this, the main one being that I started my video editing journey on mobile. For those who begin editing on mobile, software like Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve often feels overly complex at first. Final Cut Pro allows for professional-level editing, but the beauty of it lies in its beginner-friendly interface.

While it doesn’t let you perform every task with ease, the use of various plugins and recent updates has enabled Final Cut Pro to deliver performance on par with its competitors. I use this software for editing my YouTube and social media videos. I had to pay a one-time fee of about $300 for it, but now I don’t need to pay any additional charges ever again.

The only downside is that this software is exclusively available for Apple devices.

Why Video Editing is The Best Career Option?

I have earned a living by doing many things in my life. Initially, I taught private tuition, and then I started blogging. Techsuvam was my first blog, and I earned a lot from it. However, with the arrival of AI, blogging is no longer what it used to be. As a result, I am now trying to do something different.

Today, I believe AI has the potential to end the future of many types of jobs. It could take over the work of many people. However, it cannot replace professional-level work. AI can certainly help write highly accurate articles, but the articles written by humans carry emotion, something AI will never be able to replicate. The same holds for video editing.

Nowadays, many people create reels. Small edits, such as adding captions, applying various effects, or using templates to make quick edits, might soon be achievable with AI. But professional editing, documentary video editing—those kinds of tasks, although AI might handle them in the future, won’t be able to do so in the next 5 years. So, if someone wants to earn money through digital marketing, video editing is an excellent career option.

Final Thoughts

In today’s article, I’ve discussed how video editing can bring changes to our lives. I believe those who want to earn a living through video editing in the future have benefited from reading this article. If any of you have bought a laptop or computer and are still wondering what to do with it, I urge you to start video editing right away. Just watching tutorials won’t be enough—you need to practice. That’s exactly what I do myself.
